Abstract
Automorphisms of finite-dimensional tori have played an important role in ergodic theory, especially in the development of notions like hyperbolicity and entropy. On
the other hand,
toral automorphisms are intimately linked with algebraic number fields, and the latter connection has led to some very interesting links between dynamics, arithmetic
and commutative algebra in the theory of algebraic Z^d-actions.
